Vote No to House Resolution 669

April 16, 2009 By: Sam Simpson Category: Betta Breeding, Betta Care, Betta Fish Video 35 Comments →

I just got a email from ThatPetPlace.com saying that if this goes threw then all un-native animals to the U.S. can not be breed. Since Betta fish come from Asia we could no longer be able to bread them and have to import bettas from out of the U.S. Not only does it cause the betta un-needed stress but most would die from starvation and/or stress. This is what the email says “What would the world be like without pets? A new bill proposed in the House could make this a reality. All pet owners should be aware of a pending federal government resolution. House Resolution 669 is designed to change the way the government classifies animals available in the pet trade. If passed into law it will severely impact keeping pets in America and could destroy the pet industry as we know it. HR699 would make it illegal to buy, sell and breed animals not native to the United Sates. This includes most species of tropical fish, ferrets, most reptile and amphibian species, corals, and many others. Though That Fish Place/That Pet Place is in favor of an effective invasive species law, we are convinced this is absolutely not the legislation to accomplish that. Please visit our blog to find out more and learn what you can do to help prevent this legislation from being passed.” A video that came with it.

UPDATE

March 04, 2009 By: kelly Category: Betta Breeding, Betta Colors, Betta Health, Uncategorized 21 Comments →

TURNING WHITE: Thank you for all your comments on my lovely little betta turning white. He is still alive, but just a weird color now. I did some research and asking around, and discovered that bettas in the wild are not as pretty as those in captivity that are bred to be b-e-a-utiful! So I think Indy just is losing his color because of his genetics. No infection. No disease. Just genes!

I had never heard this before, and do not know if it is true. But this information comes a previous betta breeder.

Yes, he has a heater. Yes, he gets regular water changes. He is just weirdly colored now, but is still my little baby.

Hope every else is having luck! My four babies are still thriving… with a bit of fin rot. But all is well. They are piggies.

Have a good day.

Don’t Keep Male and Female Betta Fish Together

October 15, 2008 By: Timophy Category: Betta Aquariums, Betta Breeding, Betta Care, Betta Health, Betta Tips, Questions 17 Comments →

Okay, I have had enough of the questions about keeping male betta fish and female betta fish together. Just about everyday someone asks me this: “Can I keep my male betta fish with a female betta fish?” or “Why are my male betta fish and my female betta fish always ripping each other fins off?” or any variation of these questions.

From now on everyone he emails me this question is getting sent to this page.

No you CANNOT keep them together. They will kill each other. Don’t worry, they won’t get lonely either – obviously they don’t like to be around other fish.

Almost immediately after I say they can’t be kept together people always ask “Well then how do they breed?” For that answer you need to look at this page: http://www.ehow.com/how_2002252_breed-betta-fish.html

Video Of Betta Fish Spawning

December 03, 2007 By: Timophy Category: Betta Breeding, Betta Fish Video, Betta Fry 1 Comment →

This is an amazing instructional video capturing two betta fish in the act of mating. If you have never seen a betta fish spawning before this is a great example of how it looks and what to expect. Breeding Betta fish can be a lot of hard work though, especially when it comes to raising the fry correctly. Please make sure you read more about betta fish breeding before you attempt to mate your betta fish. Enjoy the video!

Weaning the Fry to Other Food

August 24, 2007 By: Timophy Category: Betta Breeding, Betta Fry, Betta Tips, Other Fish 6 Comments →

Here’s a trick to help wean your betta frys to dried food such as flake food. First, get a few baby guppies (these should be the same size as the frys or smaller than the frys) and place them in the tank containing the betta frys. Guppies feed on almost anything offered to them and so when the betta frys see the guppies eating the dried food offered, they’ll follow quickly.

I’ve also noted that betta fry seem to grow much faster with a few guppie fry in the tank. They must feel like they have to compete with the guppy fry.

Don’t worry about the baby guppies bothering your beta fry – they are way to small to do any damage.
