Plant = Fin Rot
![]() |
Hello Everyone! Sorry I haven’t written for a while- I have been busy! So a while ago my sister came home from college and she brought her betta fish with her. (Blooper) She just kept him in a glass bowl with rocks and a fake plant. He was doing great, and I loved having him. But my own fish, (Dodo) was having a problem with fin rot. My aunt who also owns a betta fish suggested taking the plant out. So I did, and now they are both doing great! My sisters fish (Blooper) Still has the plant in his tank and he is not suffering from fin rot, so I really don’t know whats up. Just thought I’d let you know in case anyone is having the same problem.

Yeah a plastic plant like that would tear the fins = fin rot. No, it wasn’t algae Shelby (though that would be possible) but the plant edges are too sharp for the Bettas long finnage. I would know. Don’t ask why.

@ Lisa – Fin rot (and tail rot) will probably be the most common disease Betta’s get.
Fin Rot is manly caused by dirty water, but they can also catch this if they tear their fins on a sharp ornament; leaving it open to bacteria and Fin Rot. It is contagious, so keep any Betta’s water away from healthy Betta’s. If you happen to have a divided tank that allows Betta’s to share the water, treat all the Betta’s involved. To tell if your Betta has Fin Rot, his tail will look torn, or with bits missing. The edges may have either a white or black lining.
To treat Fin Rot, any bacterial treatment will work. Adding aquarium salt could help too.
TIP: If you use aquarium salt, 100% sea salt is pretty much the same and works just as well. Any salt as long as it does NOT contain Iodine is fine.
Once Fin Rot is treated, fins may grow back but probably won’t be as vibrant as before.
This is from my blog, Bubbles and Bettas.

I have two bettas and i love them both but lucky has a bubble around his eye and i gave him quick cure medicine that treats for ick and protozoan parasites. Is that the right medication to give him? Is there something else that u suggest is better to use? Please do let me know!

Hi howevery u r I just read u letter and I think I know whats happening.
Cause your sister has a FAKE PLANT her betta can’t got fin rot. fin rot only happenes when the plant has died and gross green stuff starts to grow then when it has finished growing it will stay at the skin of the water so if your fish wonts to breath air in from the top of the water the green stuff will stick on your fish and then your fish will got FIN ROT.

I don’t know why that is, but I had a real plant in my fish’s vase and it made the water a little cloudy. I took it out and the water was fine, I was kind of confused because I had washed the plant thougrhly sooooooooo I don’t know. But it’s good that your fish is better.

Fake plants? Eeeew! When dealing with fish with delicate fins like betta, cheap sharp edged fake plants just don’t cut it (well they do, and there-in lies the issue). I have always tried to keep real plants that are hardy and require little light or maintainance in my betta tanks. Anubius would be a good choice, even some cheap bunch plants. Cheers.
