Frozen Brine Shrimp
![]() |
Hi Everybody! I have been researching what kind of food to feed my betta, and I have found that most people recommend frozen or live food. So I started trying Frozen Brine Shrimp, and the results are amazing! I also read that you should give a variety for your bettas diet, so I fast my betta once a week, give her brine shrimp most of the week, and occasionally give her flake food and a little part of a pea. It seems to work out great! Her color is a much more vibrant blue. Although it takes more time to feed your fish this way, your fish will thank you! I highly reccomend Frozen Brine Shrimp, and there are a lot in a package!

Frozen foods such as the ones you mentioned should only be feed as a treat. Peas have also been known not to be good for bettas. Why don’t you try some betta pellets, with some frozen food once a week, and fast them once a week.

Hi. I’m babysitting a fish which I believe is a Betta. The fish food pellets have a self-measured amount of food to feed the fish. The directions indicate that the fish should be fed this amount of food twice a day. But, the owner indicated only to feed the fish once a day and only 3-4 pellets. I cannot contact the owner to ask any questions. Help! Should I just feed the 3-4 pellets a day or at least the one “serving” the directions indicate, which is roughly 15-20 pellets? Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Never mind. I contacted a Petsmart and they told me that Betta’s only need 3-4 pellets/day.
Thanks anyways!

You can find frozen brine shrimp at most fish or pet stores. You might have to ask for it because its hard to find. There is so much in a package, I got mine a few years ago and not even 3/4 of it is gone. It’s crazy! Just keep it frozen and take a knife and cut off the tiniest piece. Even if it just looks like shaving. Then put it in the same temperature water as your pets tank, and peck it with a toothpick. It will fall apart into little, tiny pieces of shrimp. Pick a piece of shrimp with a toothpick and lower it into your pets tank. I usually give mine about 3 little shrimp per week at one time. They will love it! =]

Frozen brine shrimp aren’t always available where I buy food for my bettas, so I feed them frozen brine shrimp as a treat when I can find it. But mostly I give them flake food (I try to find the really good sort) and a little bit of live food like tubifex worms (which I hear are really fatty, so I only give them those worms very occasionally).

I worked at a pet store for a while and talked to our fish supplier a lot. He told me that FROZEN peas were used to help cure swim bladder disease in many types of fish. He wasn’t sure exactly how it helped but he said he used it with his fish and had great results. I’ve also heard it’s great for bloated fish.
Heres a website on betta specifics
