*Correction*
Chloramine combines chlorine and ammonia (which is also toxic), so depending on how your water is treated you may need to treat it for chlorine and ammonia

James know what he's talking about.
To add to that, distilled water is not recommended for any animal! There is no situation where an animal would ever encounter distilled or de-mineralized water in the wild. They may still live, but they are lacking some important minerals that are disolved in the water. There is also some debate on whether distilled water is even good for human consumption.
And for anyone having problems with fish dieing as soon as you bring them home, take into acount the health of the fish when you bought him. Some have been waiting on the shelves so long they're already ill. You'll have the best luck with fish that are allert and readly posture. I'd also recomend finding out when the store recieves their shippments of fish.
Depending on the size of the tank you also may need to cycle the tank. If it's 10 gallons or bigger you may lose them to something called "New Tank Syndrome" Thats when the tank water is lacking benificial bactera. To prevent fish loss its recomended to run a tank set up for atleast a week, and/or put in some feeders. If you can't wait some pet stores have chemicals that can add the benificial bacteria to that water and lower the risk. Also, partial water changes/filter changes help maintain this level of bacteria.
And I wouldn't always listen to the person working at the pet store. Especially the large pet stores like petco/petsmart/petland. Most of the employees are there just for the pay check. Always look for a second opinion, and try to find someone passionate about their job. Smaller local shops usually have more educated staff, cause they're in it for the joy of it. Also they make a profit on educating their customers and getting return customers. The big stores get you cause its the first thing to pop to mind when looking for pets.
Other things:
Make sure the water is as close to the same tempurature as the water the fish is already in. Sudden temp changes can shock and kill your fish.
Always check the instructions on the De-chlorinaters as they come in various strengths (Diluted for betta bowls or concentrated for large tanks)
Always clean every part of your set up, never add ornimantes/gravels right out of the package.
And tap water isn't a bad choice for fish, it has important minerals and nutrients. There shouldn't be any problem if the water is properly treated for chlorine and chloromine. But if you find your doing everthing right and your fish still dies, check the water. Pet stores should do it if you have a reciept, and within a few days of purchase, but not usually if you just wander in asking for one. The chemicals for testing the water aren't free.

At PetCo and PetsMart they usually have something called Betta Water. It's not that expensive, and it's made just right for bettas. However it comes in smaller amounts so when I use it I usually buy a couple bottles. Or I just use regular tap water with a few drops of declorinator in it. Either of them works.

Just use Tap water and put in the water purifier. If your changing the water the night before put the new water in a pichter put in the purifier. Then most of the chemicals should be gone and it's ready to change into your Tank/or Bowl.

Ok, i got my betta several days ago. I knew tap water would kill it because it killed my other fish. You can use tap water with conditioner!!! BUT some conditioners require a wait time. i got some fish mate condithioner that makes water instantly safe for fish! READ THE LABEL FOR PRECAUTIONS AND STUFF!!! also using spring water which today i did, some people just use spring some use it with dechlorenator to be safe use half the regular dech... with spring water. I do that and my fish is happy.. EXCEPT from the inside of my tnak its a mirror and my betta keeps ramming the wall at full force... i think its mentally retarded...

James comments are very accurate. Spring water is the best and you don't have to worry about dosaging the conditioners. The way I prepaire my betta bowls is the following: I remove the fish and the artifficial soft plants and dump the entire content in a strainer. Wash everything with hot water and rinse with spring water; put everything back together, pour spring water and voila! the betta's appartment is ready for living. If I don't use tap water for human consumption, then why should I use it for my bettas who have to live in it?
