Turning white…
![]() |
Hello fellow bloggers,
I have a mystery I need help solving! One of my bettas is turning white. It is slowly spreading from his dorsal fin all around his body. It isn’t a fungus or sickness. Nothing is growing on him. He is active, healthy and eats like a piggy. His tank stays at a reasonable temperature and he gets weekly water changes. Is this from old age? He has been living close to a year.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Betta Fish are what I blog about.

Hello Kelly,
Bettas sometimes change colors when they do get older. My Betta a crowntail use to be more white and with a blue head. Now he has red fins with blue streaks in the fins.
Also what do you feed him? Even though the Betta is not a big fan once in a while I would feed him Betta food.

Hi, it may be stress, or natural discoloration. Natural discoloration is caused by old age. good luck!

It’s natural. When they get old they develop different colors. I had an orange betta and a few month’s later he got some purple on his gill area. So relax, because it’s natural (I said it again oh my gosh).

It sounds like a bacterial fungus. My beta Rojo had it but his turned black because he was a dark colored fish. What color is yours?
You might want to try Melafix or Betafix. If he is not swimming at all and just sits at the bottom or if it continues up to his gills; it too late for meds. You might have to put him to sleep.
To put him to sleep you can use a little clove oil in a small cup or freeze him. Those are the human ways to put a fish to sleep.

In response to age. A beta’s life span is 2-4 years and some times longer.
In response to water temp. Betas like the water to be between 68-75 degrees. No hotter or colder.
On that note thought sometimes if you turn up the heat a little like 76-78 degrees it might kill any harmful bacteria in the water that might be attacking him

it is probably the cells that make color in his scales are probably dieing at a fast rate ware they cant do mitosis fast enough to make the color to come back………..this is my guess

I heard they go white if they don’t get enough natural light..?

It can be due to stress. Are u sure u have a heater. betta changes colour due to variation in temp.

oh if you want its color back their is a tripe of fish food for bettas that gives them brighter color or in this case their color back.

Does this fish have any marble geno? The color of marble bettas will change as they mature. Because you’re saying this is not an infection or parasite, this is my best guess. Make sure to monitor this fish closely.

your betta is a marble type. marbles will change color through age, either by turning into solid color or cellophane

I have had bettas for years. I do have one that change from blue to white and back to to blue and is going white again. He is a crown tail. Full finage. About 2 years now. Full bubble nests (no probs). He is full of perosnality too. I think with mine, it is a color gene thing.
