Sick Betta
![]() |
Hello everyone!! Bo’s tail rot is getting better, but he has another problem. He has just been sitting at the bottom of his tank, kind of sideways, all the time. When I go and tap on his tank he comes up, but other than that he only comes up for air. He isn’t eating either. He has a few, (very few) white spots on his face. I’m not sure if he has Ick or if he is just depressed. Does anyone have any sugestions? I could really, REALLY use some. This is the first time my betta has gotten sick, and I’m not sure what to do. Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Carley,
Is Bo scratching himself on anything? That is another sign of Ick/Ich.
Also, I know of a Betta that is turning white due to no heater. The water is just a bit too cold for his taste and he is losing his color. Fortunately, he is still very active and eating. Do you have a heater? If so/not, how cold/warm is his water?
I have no experience with Ich, if that is what it is. But I’ve read that raising the temp will help and you will need to get medicine. It sounds like if that is what it is, you’ve caught it at the beginning stage. Good luck!
Also, if you put a bit of aquarium salt in his tank each water change, it will help keep bad bacteria away and will de-stress him.
Keep us updated!

Does Bo have a distended or bloated looking stomach? If so he might be suffering from constipation or bloat. You will need to give him some high fiber flakes and then fast him for 3 days to let him void. What type of tank or bowel do you have him in? If there are no plants or decorations for him to rest on he can get fin rot easily. If you are truely worried take several pictures of him from different angles and a bit of his water and go to your local pet store, they can tell by looking at the pictures if there is Ich and the will also test the water for you to see if that is the problem. Petco is really good for that.

Hi! K + C, i have no heater and white rocks on the bottom of the tank. The white reflects the tank light to make it brighter, that’s just my guess. Maybe its because i just got a new bulb.
Also, I got a new betta. His names Rubin, after the astronomer. He’s a crowntail with an opaque body. Though when in the sun, its hot pink! His fins are red, and at the base of his tail, it’s periwinkle blue.

well hear is some help IF he is depressed (my fish is too) get another fish or get a smaller tank and put a betta in it (at least 1 gallon tank) and make sure it is a MALE betta. As for the Ick you can find TONS of medications for ick/ich and I believe a few just for bettas. If you get a tank with a divider for the depression then make sure the other betta (bo in this case) is fully healed from ick or when treating Bo. I would get another tank and put the other betta in that then you can treat both the ick and depression at the same time. So he will heal faster, well hope this helps.

Hm…. I would start by cleaning out his tank THOROUGHLY. A lot of times its the tank. Clean everything off well and then put the conditioner in. I believe that heaters are a little overrated. Just get a water thermometer and make sure it stays within 70 degrees and 80 degrees. If all else fails, you might want to go to a local RELIABLE pet shop and ask them. Good luck!

You should not use another fish as a depression aid. For one, this may make the situation worse. The fish will flare and square off until one of them backs down. This one that backs down is the loser while the other fish is dominant. There is a good chance that having recently recovered from an illness will cause your fish Bo to be the loser. Betta fish hate being the loser and will often become very very depressed once this happens.
Instead use a mirror. Your fish will not know the difference between a live fish and his reflection. Show him the mirror for a minute or so and when he is showing the mirror his large impressive profile, slowly back the mirror away so that he sees it as a victory. This will actually help depression instead of hinder it.
As for the rot, what have you been treating it with? A combination of Maracyn and Maracyn II are recommended to treat bacterial infections such as fin rot. The white spots on his face are ick if they look like grains of salt, but if they are more of splotches then they may be a fungus which explains why any antibiotics you are using aren’t working.

Maybe someone can help. I have a sick betta…he has enlarged gills and i treated him with bettafix for a bacterial infection(he had raised scales which are better) but his gills are still swollen and he is breathing rapidly. Ots been almost two weeks. Is it possible that he has a parasite affecting his gills? I just started to treat him with maracyn 2 but it only looks like his gills are getting worse. He is laying on the bottom of the water on his side and only comes up for air and then goes back down to the bottom. I have a filter without the carbon in. Should I maybe use coppersafe? If you have any recommendations I would greatly apppreciate it.

That’s too bad, Brittny. I would have emailed you. He would probably had stress or velvet or just was depressed.

brittny i hav some tips for u and ur sick fish the reason ur fish spits out the food is it might not like it my fish spits out the food i feed it witch is tertramin tropical granules it also eats some im working on finding another fish food… but anyway i would suggest finding another fish food and try that.and make sure u clean ur tank VERY GOOD like rinse ur tank and rocks and plant under HOT OR WARM water so it will kill germs make sure when ur done cleaning that theres no poo or uneaten food left on it if there is rinse it under water and at the same time kinds like squeezes it and get the dirt out i take a my fish net put the rocks in there and rinse them under warm water and squeeze it so it all comes out make sure there clean when ur done then rinse out ur tank with warm water is theres dirt in the corners of cracks take a paper towl and wipe it off i fill my tank with spring water witch i but from the store then put clor out drops in it that eliminates any clorine but for u i would use water conditioner it eliminates ANYTHING harmful in ur water including clorine thats wat i do but i only hav a simple one gallon triangle tank i dont hav a big retangle ten gallon thing. i hope ur betta gets better!

HI I was just wondering about my fish. I’ve had him for about 3-4 months now and he’s usually a very happy fish and is always swimming aorund. Well yesterday I cleaned out his bowl and when I put him back in he just wouldn’t swim he hid behing a tree and wouldn’t move and he was like that for the rest of the night. Today when I came back from my class I went to feed him and I couldn’t find him and I looked on the side and he had jumped out (don’t worry he’s still alive) I put him back in the bowl and now hes not swimming again and he’s just laying at the bottom of his bowl. any advise I what to do? Is he Depressed?
