Well, in my case, its different. The Neon Tetras nip at the Betta's fins and also some times try a coordinated attack at the Betta during feeding time. And these Tetras are so fast that the Betta can never catch them. I am now fearing for my Betta more than the Tetras.

I have one male and three female Betta’s (also two Pleco’s and three Corey’s to help with the scraps). I buy about four – six Tetra’s every other week or so, my Betta’s love them, they’re a great source of protein and it encourages their natural predatory nature; which I find also enhances the Betta’s colors.

two female bettas alone wont do well.they create a pecking order and the less dominant one usually gets picked on.try three females at once.NOT in a small tank.and it helps if you give them some hidey cave things.especially with tetras.set up small holes for them to hide in and a large cave thing for your betta.thats what i did.now if my betta gets aggressive they just go to their hiding spots and wait it out.

Just reading over some of these posts and wanted to add a quick note for you. Our male Betta was looking a bit lonely. So, we bought three red finned Tetras. These were supposed to be "okay" fish to put in the same tank as our Betta. 100% correct. Our Betta got along great with them. The problem we had, was that one of the Tetras decided he wanted to Alpha Tetra. When we went to feed them one night the Alpha Tetra starting attacking the smallest Tetra. Our Betta actually tried to get in between the Alpha Tetra and the small Tetra and protect him. The Alpha Tetra killed the small one. Prior to this we had two male Bettas in a small fish bowl for about a year with no problems. It actually seemed like they enjoyed the company. Just personal experience. We are not fish experts, but we don't believe that your Betta killed your Tetra. We are pretty sure it was one of the other Tetras.

all of these responses are very interesting. I have two bettas, mae and a female 10 gal and they get along great. Also in the same tank I have 3 neons, absolutely no problems, and they have been living together for several months. Im actually going to add more fish and specifically neons bc neons should actually be in groups of 5 or more.
honestly fish compatibility depends on the fish. my bettas are pretty docile, the male never shows intrest in the neon, but the female might follow one for a second but never nip. Though strangley enough I had problems with keeping guppies with the bettas (the guppies always were eaten) I know this is a late post but you really should get to know a betta before adding other fish. It seems to me that as long as you keep everyone well fed there arent problems. Clearly the smaller the tank and the hungrier the fish the more likely problems are going to occur. but with plenty of space and hiding spots bettas can live happily with other fish it just doesnt happen all of the time. It takes some trial and error to know how to get a community tank with 'agressive' fish species.
