Betta Fish With Neon Tetras
![]() |
This question comes from Unoe
i jus bought my betta bout a few days ago and today i bought some neon tetra for the tank as well, i got three of them and they seemed fined until i went home a put them in the tank they all seemed to get along my betta left the others alone and no harm done, i went out and when i came back i noticed that i only saw two of the three neon tetras in the tank the third was at the bottom dead, is it possible that it died of disease or jus stress, because it kinda was the runt from the three, and he stayed on the top of the tank, and never went down he jus stayed there gulping, so i jus thought he was jus retarded, im jus concerned bout the other fish are they gone be ok, cuz when i took em out he wasnt stiff, he was jus limp, does that mean he died from something else and not that neon tetra disease i’ve heard about?
No, The neon tetra probably died because the betta killed it. Betta’s can sometimes get along with other fish for a short period of time. But a small fish like neon tetras becomes easy targets. I have seem people feed those kind of fish to betta’s before. It is just not a good mix. The guy at the pet store shouldn’t have told you to do that.

Sorry to hear about your tetra and yes I do agree that the betta probably killed it. I have heard that you can keep a female with tetra with no problems. Is your betta a male?

Yes, it is but the wierd thing was that the other tetras werent killed and now that i took them out my betta seems board he jus chills at the top of the tank, but then again i do have him in a glass vace and have rocks and a live plant in it, i now that they like larger space but i have no space for a large tank, so could that be why or is he jus gettin used to it, i had him in a small bowl for a week and now in a larger space? i jus want my betta to be happy. an should i put the tetras that are alive back in or should i take them back?

sorry forgot to add that the other tetra are bout the same size as my male betta but jus without the long fins

If you want to feed them to your betta you can put them back in, otherwise I would recommend you take them back. It’s your call.

Well in my experience I never put a (male)Betta with any other fish. I have seen them in tanks swimming freely with Dwarf Gourmis. Most of the time in the pet stores I would see the pet store put them in little plastic cages in the tank with other tropical fish.
Plus the Betta is such a pretty fish (kinda a pre madonna as well
) so why would you put it in with other fish LOL.

What fish can i put with my betta, i heard i can put angel fish in with him, and they would have no problem. I jus bought a 5-10 gallon tank i don’t know exactly all i know is that it is huge for just a small fish so i want to put other fish that can live peacefully with my betta and honestly my betta doesnt seem to aggressive he jus chills on the plants swims around and does it again, he hardly flares up, even when i put a mirror in his face or is he sick?

i bought Aquarium pharmaceuticals pro series general cure to kill any parasites in my tank that can make my betta sick, yet my tank is cloudy? it was cloudy before i added the medication in, so y is it cloudy i used tap water with a filter thinkin that it would help but could it have made it worse or is the plants causing the tank to become cloudy, or is there something i can buy to clear up the cloudyness in the tank?

i had a betta(who i thot was fairly peaceful as he lived with a cory fine)and i bought 4 neon tetras and he was fine 4 a day then he killed them 1 by 1, i managed to save 2 but the next day he died too, maybe he poisoned himself or maybe it was guilt, hmm. but he did it because they were small and brightly coloured. jealousy! plus i later found out that neons are fin nippers.

i bought 3 dwarf gouramis to put in the tank with my betta and so far they seem to get along well they don’t really fight he jus flares up and nips at them, is he just showing his dominance in the tank?

Hi.
I have a male and two females. I just got 2 neon tetras and a Clown Loach.
Most people say 2 female bettas will get along fine. Though when I put the two in they followed each other around and then attacked. I quickly put a cup in and 1 of my Betta’s swam in quickly. Would they get along with my other fish. I DON’T want to put ANY fish at risk.
Also I am wondering about Clown Loaches. How big will they get. My Crown Loach is Maximum of 5 inches or 6 centimeters. The person I got him Or her (How Do You Tell?) from said that he is 1 or 2 years old.
Please Help!
PS. I have the neons and loach in a 10 gallion tank.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem. Neon tetras should not be kept with a betta. I didn’t have a problem with my dwarf gourami though.
Paradise fish are a no no with the male betta.

I KNOW the betta killed him when i was setting up my female community i put in some neon tetras with my male betta (he was and is still living with a corycat and white clouds) when i was done putting in my females i turned around to my male swimming with the tetra in his mouth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i removed the other two neons and put them with my females now the females and neons are the best friends possible

Sometimes bettas can get along with other fish.

In my opinion, I would not put a betta with other fish, they dont like it and neither do the other fish.

i NEVER put any other fish with my bettas cuz well….. with the tank i have now it would be so crowded that my bettas would attack and kill the other fish and besides i have a one gallon triangle tank with two bettas one female and one male they r seperated by a divider but i kinda think they r a couple cuz they loved eachother enough to lay eggs 4 times together ine jumped over the divider to lay eggs and i put a cover on that came with the tank it alowas them to jump over the divider if they hav to lay eggs but they cant jump OUT of the fish tank and i never got a heater cuz my room is always warmer then the rest of the house and i keep my bettas in my room BUT my brother is so cruel he had a betta and he kept it in the kitchen by a window next to the sink and there was always sunlight shining on the tank and the water was evaporating and he didnt care once it got so low the bettas top fin kinda poked out and the betta was at the bottom once i even added clean water cuz i felt so bad for it then it died no surprise but my bettas r living heathy and would betta eggs hatch if they r out of the water cuz umm my mom bumped the tank and some of the eggs inside bubbles r sticking to the side above the water so if they hatch thats a problem so lets hope for the best and my males name is cinnomin cuz it kinda looks like cinnomin and my females name is sugar not that it looks like sugaris would just match the males name

all of these responses are very interesting. I have two bettas, mae and a female 10 gal and they get along great. Also in the same tank I have 3 neons, absolutely no problems, and they have been living together for several months. Im actually going to add more fish and specifically neons bc neons should actually be in groups of 5 or more.
honestly fish compatibility depends on the fish. my bettas are pretty docile, the male never shows intrest in the neon, but the female might follow one for a second but never nip. Though strangley enough I had problems with keeping guppies with the bettas (the guppies always were eaten) I know this is a late post but you really should get to know a betta before adding other fish. It seems to me that as long as you keep everyone well fed there arent problems. Clearly the smaller the tank and the hungrier the fish the more likely problems are going to occur. but with plenty of space and hiding spots bettas can live happily with other fish it just doesnt happen all of the time. It takes some trial and error to know how to get a community tank with ‘agressive’ fish species.

I think the betta killed it
