My Beta recently died, I bought him from a cheap pet store for a school project. He was a little over 3 1/2 years old. I even had a dog when I was younger from a mall pet store that lived for 15 years so I believe no matter where a pet comes from it can survive you just have to be a little careful which ones you pick. I know of many people that haven't purchased their fish from the best pace and the fish has survived. Even my first fish was a bit deformed and lived for a while.
