Can Betta Fish Taste?
![]() |
Absolutely! We’ve all experienced with our Bettas how they spit out certain foods, but gobble down others before you can get it completely in the tank. Fish have Tastebuds. These Tastebuds are located in their Mouth, on their Lips and in surrounding areas on their Heads.
Their Tastebuds act as receptors. The receptors signals the brain that they are in contact with food. And in many cases, the Fish can smell the food, even if they can’t see it.. In addition, the Fish use their sense of Smell, in connection with their Tastebuds to detect food.
Note: Many times, I’ve dropped food in that tanks, and the Betta didn’t see it. But he finds it within a minute. It’s those Tastebuds and Nostrils at work.

Ok. Gee, I needed that information. My betta really has to fight to get a fish pellet down his teeny little throat. Is it because he’s just young and that he needs room to grow? I know those pellets are small, but they’re really big to my fish.

I also want to know: When you are out of fish food ya think that they could eat bugs from your backyard? Would It make them sick? I heard that you fed dried blood worms to yours, but does that really count?

Im using a half moon bettas as my center pieces in my beach themed wedding w/ flashing ice cubes (light cubes) Is it a good idea or will the fish go crazy and harm themselves? I really wanna use them but I dont wanna hurt the fish. And also how clean are these types of fish because I dont want them spitting out food in the middle of dinner, or the water becoming dirty during the reception. Thanks

If fish had no sense of taste, there would be no reason to flavor their food.
Therefore, one could assume that they are attracted to foods by taste or smell.
As you know, most betta pellet food…tends to smell like fish.
The local pet store attaches slices of cucumber or zuchinni to the in-side of the tank… and the fish nibble on the slice…all day long.
