Did your betta fish jump out?
![]() |
I noticed a lot of people find this blog by searching for the phrase “Betta Jumped Out” or something similar. They are then directed to my article about what to do when you betta jumps out of the tank. Well.. I sure hope you are doing something about your out-of-water fish before looking on the internet for something to do, because that is a lot of wasted time.
Pick The Fish Up - Put It In The Tank. That’s all you have to do.
Consider yourself lucky that you have a betta fish instead of most others. Betta fish have the unique ability to breathe air. So once you put your fish back in the water leave it alone for 24 hours and hope it stays alive. Next time try to keep your betta’s tank covered if it has a high water level.

Thank you for the information it has helped ease my mind a little. My Betta is in a large clear vase with a plant in it, this is the first time he has ever tried to jump, so finding him on my floor was very alarming. Thank you for the information and yes I put him in water before checking the web.

Betta’s do love to jump so make sure you put some type of cover over the top of their habitat

My betta jumped out and it was out for a good 10 minutes before I found out. I put in back in the water and after a minute it was alive.

no jumping yet! thank goodness!
#1 ~ although it looks pretty to keep your betta in a vase with a flower, it’s pretty inhumane. contrary to popular belief, bettas thrive in larger tanks where they have space to swim! try it! ^__^
#4 ~ it’d be ok to cover the top of your fish tank, just as long as you don’t fill the tank up all the way to the brim with water. leave some room for air at the top, so your fish can go up to gulp air.

o i have any EASY salotion to that!!!!!! see my fish tank came with a plastic cover with a hole in it to put food in but they cant jump out of the hole see my betta female always jumps to the males side to lay eggs cuz they r seperated between a plastic divider and once i hade to put my female in a seperate cup and i put that plastic wrap opver and secured it with a rubberband and poked a lot of small holes in it for air cuz my fish go to the top for air cuz i dont have a filter all my bettas did tht and they were perfectly fine so thats how i keep them from jumpin out just put a cover on it mine has a hole for feeding and they never jumped out and if u dont have a cover use like plastuc wrap and use a rubber band to secure it i used the rubber band on a small cup with my fish in it just for three days and if u have a big rectangle tank the rubber band might not go all the way around.

JUST COVER UR TANK WITH ANYTHING THAT WORKS!!!
August 3rd, 2009 at 3:59 pm
like poke holes in the cover if ur using plastic wrap but u can also buy a cover that has holes in it or get a filter that puts oxegen in the water
August 3rd, 2009 at 4:05 pm
my betttas always breath air insted of a filter and they r fine cuz thers not enough room in my tank for a filter! its a one gallon triangle tank two bettas seperated by a divider it has a cover but my female isd able to jump over the divider but since i have the cover on they can jump out of the fish tank but still make it over the divider if they have to lay eggs i always keep the water high enough so that my female can jump to the other side to lay eggs theve layed eggs four times now and my male never jumps my female its always the one to jump since my female is smalller and doesnt have long fins trailing behind like my male its a good idea.

My Betta hasn’t tried to jump yet, unless there is food above it. Sometimes when I am about to put the food in the water it’ll jump up and try to grab it. Needless to say that it scared the hell out of me when her first did it! Now I am quicker and he rarely jumps for it!
My Betta is just grumpy and impatient. But I love his attitude!

I have had three betta fish and they never ever have jumped out or tried to jump out. It may be that their tank is too small or else they are just not being treated right. My fish are always happy and swimming and eating. They require a lot of attention. They like to be spoiled. They definitely do not ever need to be covered. You have to treat them like kings and queens (but don’t over feed them).

Ive have several bettas that liked to jump out of their bowls. One of them jumped out three times and then died at the age of 5. Any bowls i get either are tall and i fill the water about halfway or I get them with lids on them so they dont jump out!

My betta fish (female veiltail) jumped out of her cup while I was changing the tank water. I left her unattended for 40 minutes (the longest I left her in a cup). I bought her from petco on aug 10, 2011, and she was recovering from what looked like finrot. But ever since she jumped out, I noticed her body has discolored. The side which she landed on the ground (from dresser to floor ~2.5-3 ft) is blackened including around her eye. But her eyes are still clear, just dark around the one that was against the floor. As for color, it seems she has faded. Her fins were clumpy upon initial introduction back into the tank but are a little better now. I don’t know if she has developed more severe finrot due to lack of water because the edges look dark. I have had her in a quarantine jar for 2 days now. Is it okay to put her in the tank or should I wait to be sure she is healthy again? She still eats and is now swimming. What can I do to ensure she fully recovers? Do I need to buy medication? Will her color be restored and is the darkening a bruise or is it necrosis? I really want to put her back in the tank, but at the same time am afraid she may die and contaminate everything in it. Please help. Thank you.

Im going to get a crowntail. I have plenty of space and a name for him. I now know not to fill the aquarium too much. THX

My betta fish jumped out because a fly landed in his bowl. He must have went crazy but he jumped out and landed in my school bag. I hope he makes it. We went to Pet Express and they told me to get Stress Zyme and Maracyn. I have put both in the tank, removed the fly first, and hope my fish gets better real soon. He is swimming around but his fins are still not right yet, and he’s not himself.

I have two each in their own 5 gallon tank and my crowntail jumped out of the feedhole I had accidently left open without me noticing. He was dead and dried by time I noticed he was missing from his tank. He had sat on the glass of the desk for who knows how long and propped himself up. I was so traumatized thinking of how long he must had sat there breathing air but slowly dehydrating. Rotten experience. Don’t let it happen to your betta.
