How much should I feed my Betta?
![]() |
For very young Bettas (under 6 months) and females of all ages, 4 or 5 pellets a day is sufficient. For older Bettas, 6 or 7 pellets should be fed. Try to space out their pellets for at least two feedings per day (in the morning and in the early evening), if possible. If you have time to feed only once a day, make sure that it is at least two hours before turning off the lights.

Ash, no worries. Your betta probably just has SED (Scale Erosion Disorder). This is a more recently discovered disorder for domestic fish, bettas especially. Due to certain levels of acid in the water, the food, basically everything about your fish’s habitat, the scales (particularly around the head region) weaken. Because head/neckish-area scales and skin are a bit thinner than the rest of the body, they are quick to weaken and erode with SED. This can cause your betta to seem out of breath (or water, should I say…?), and in extreme cases, small bits of food may actually go in the mouth, but fall through a tiny opening (eroded scales, really) under the chin. You should check the ph level of your water, and make sure your fish food is GENTLE. Coarse, boxy pellets are especially prone to SED and are more harmful for your fish. I’ve lost more than one to SED, but it IS preventable, to a certain extent. I just hope it’s not too late for your cutie fish.

Betta Girl, just make sure to thoroughly check that food. I would hate to see SED take another family member.
