My new Betta does not eat, is he sick?
![]() |
Oftentimes Bettas refuse to eat when exposed to a new environment. Whether you bought your Betta from a breeder or at the pet store, the new fish needs time to adjust. It is normal for Bettas not to eat for up to two weeks after being brought home. Food should be introduced one pellet per day until he begins to eat. Do not be alarmed if your fish ignores the pellet or spits it right out – Bettas can be very picky eaters, especially after stressful situations. If after 5 minutes your fish does not eat the pellet, remove it from his water and try again the next day.

Betta Fish are what I blog about.

I just bought a betta fish as a gift, so I have a few questions.
1. It’s still in the tiny container it came in from the petstore, so how long can I leave it in there?
2. How do I get it to open up its fins?
3. The tank I bought came with a divider, so is it wise to put two bettas in direct view of each other (they can see each other, but they can’t create any physical contact), or will that cause undue stress on them? Should I just put them in two separate tanks?
Thanks a lot

amita:
1. it is very stressful to a betta to be kept in such a small container. move him into the divider. if there isnt another fish in it take out the divider.
2. he will when he is comfortable around you. be patient young grasshopper. : )
3. you can put them together if male and female. but even with a divider two males together is very stressful. i would try taking the divider out and getting the other betta a separate tank.

The size of the tank had EVERYTHING to do with the Betta, I put Carmichael in a smaller gallon tank and he is doing A LOT better, I had to do the same for my other betta Daemon. So if he isn’t eating, that maybe why, that is what was wrong with my two specail bettas. =)
Please never make it flare, =( that really hurts the fish and causes tearing… I always scold Carmichael for Flaring. And he is so smart, he always listens and stops. =) Haven’t had a problem with Daemon flaring, I think he is too sweet natured too flare. =)
If they can see each other they will flare, and attack the side of the tank, which causes nose bleeding and injures… =( Buy seperat tanks, or make sure they aren’t able to see each other.

I used to have 4 bettas and I put all their tanks right next to each other. 2 of the boys never flared, and of course my little girl didn’t either, but one of my guy fish was so vain. He was a great fish, but vain. He was always flaring at nothing. He definitely wasn’t flaring at other bettas cuz he was always faced the wrong way. He wouldn’t listen when I told him to stop either. Unfotunately I only have one betta now. My little girl betta, Shimmer!

that is definitly too much
only feed it once
I heard that a betta’s stomach is only as big as it’s eye
not 100% sure on that fact though
